Vostok Amphibian Automatic Dive Watch…
Vostok Ministry Amphibian (traditional case) $40 – $69
The Russian watch collection continues with the Vostok Amphibian. It uses the Vostok 2416 movement which has been proven reliable over the years. Vostok has been producing watches since 1942. The “Amphibian” model made it’s splash in the late 1960’s and it’s still being sold to this day.
The Vostok Amphibian is available in a traditional round case or in a squared case design like this one. There are a wide variety of dials available and that have been produced over the years, some limited, some common. Though I didn’t pick this particular dial design shown in the pics, it’s all they had with the square bezel for immediate delivery so I bought it. It’s straight up bling bling gold numbers and hands folks ! haha. It’s actually kinda cool because the numbers and gold accents are 3D / raised, “beveled” and catch even the most faint of light sources and can be seen easily in dimly lit environments. This is great since the lume / glow in the dark accents on the watch are very poor.
Its great to see a reliable automatic watch on the market for only $40 – $69 (depending on where you shop). It’s been said a hundred times… but think of this as the eastern block mechanical version of the Casio G-Shock. Shock resistant, Water resistant to 200meters, stainless steel, etc. It’s built like a tank, though the bracelet is not exactly the top of the line, but that can be easily swapped.
Here it is with a rubber strap. Lightens up the watch and off-sets the bling bling on the dial a bit. Though this watch does not have a mineral crystal, the crystal is thick and domed. While it does not scratch easily… any scratches that you may get can be easily buffed out and the crystal returned to as new condition even after a few years worth of scratches.
This watch has 3 crown positions screwed down (with rubber seal), a winding position, and a setting position. As with most Vostok movements setting the time is very easy, but setting the date requires you to basically wind the hands until the actual date is reached, there is no quickset feature, though you can advance the date by sweeping past 12, then turn the hour back to 8pm, then back to 12 and repeat.

It’s a decent timepiece for the price. If you got $50 or so laying around and want a decent, rugged mechanical movement dive watch that will go head to head with watches costing 2 to 3 times that, I’d say pick one up for yourself. Admittedly at first I was not too keen on the looks of these watches, but they have grown on me, and they will go into regular rotation on my wrist in years to come.
